PMOS

Polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome, the 2026 name for the condition formerly called PCOS. A multisystem endocrine and metabolic condition.

In review

PMOS stands for polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome. It is the name confirmed by global consensus in May 2026 for the condition formerly called polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

The rename did not change the diagnosis or the biology. It made the name more accurate. "Polyendocrine" puts the hormonal system at the centre. "Metabolic" names insulin resistance as a defining feature rather than a complication. "Ovarian" keeps the ovary in the picture without the misleading "polycystic," since the structures involved are follicles, not cysts.

Diagnosis still rests on the Rotterdam criteria: two of three among hyperandrogenism, ovulation problems, and polycystic ovary morphology on ultrasound, with other causes ruled out. If you had a PCOS diagnosis, you have a PMOS diagnosis. The condition is the same; the name caught up to the science.
